Anyone dealt w/ what sounds like a rotational rattle (?) at speeds above 45 mph? I'm hearing it independent of engine speed (which, thankfully, makes me think it's not motor-related. It sounds rotational and ... but not there at all at speeds below 45.

I have already changed out the IWE valve - saw that this was a common noise-maker. Thinking it could be a hub, possible vacuum leak w/ the lock mechanism, or something in that space. Also worried it could be a transfer case issue or front diff that's going/gone bad.

    Wondering if anyone's dealt w/ similar noise(s) and if you've found a magic bullet. '17 SCREW - 68K miles.

    thanks

In case anyone’s still watching this thread. Finally got this diagnosed correctly. Front drive shaft cv joint (transfer case side) - boot was torn and it must’ve been like that long enough to get the joint pretty F’d.

Shitty part is I paid to have a 3rd party inspection done when I bought the truck in Feb of this year. And that rattle has been around since I’ve owned it. So that was a waste of money.

Next adventure is the replacement - Ford says they’re back-ordered (like most parts these days). So 4-5 weeks plus $400-500 ... A local transmission shop I’ve used before thinks they can get the joint rebuilt for far less (assuming the damage isn’t too bad). And they’re gonna do removal/reinstall for only a few bucks more than the dealer charged me to diagnose the problem.

Truck has 69k miles - so if you’re in that range keep an eye on those boots. I can’t vouch for how abused my truck was before I bought it — but that’s not like impact damage or hard-launch related. Just wear.

Glad you found the problem. That torn boot letting dirt and grime get in there could very well be the culprit!

Along with my Raptor, I also have a '13 SCrew 4x4, 3.5 Eco with 130,000+ on it and no issues at all. However, all of the boots are still intact.

Good luck with your repair and please post how it comes out.

Guess I’m running in 2wd for the foreseeable future. Ford won’t even hazard a guess when they can deliver a new one... gonna see if a local driveshaft shop can rebuild.

Interesting... I have a noise at low speed, more like when I am accelerating east from a start. Cam phaser has already been fixed so its not that. Its not all the time, and sounds like its coming from underneath, like the transmission or transfer case. I'll be checking my boots this weekend.

I didn't see it on the truck - but when the local shop pulled the skid plates on the lift, they said you could grab that front drive shaft and replicate the noise by pulling/pushing on it. I mean you could probably see if one of those boots was torn-up or damaged too.

They also had it up on the lift and ran it up to 40+ MPH to pinpoint the noise. That's some small-shop stuff, most dealerships won't pull that off - they charge $100 to use chassis ears and locate ... vs. $150 for the full remove/replace.

BTW - found a local driveshaft shop that rebuilt the joint for a $115. New part is over $500 and Ford can't even guess when they'll have them to ship right now. So if that's your issue, look up a local place for refurb first.
