I bought a ‘17 with 70K on it and I believe the truck has a timing chain rattle on a cold start. I know the previous gen 3.5 had a huge issue with this, but I didn’t know it continued with the 2nd gen. Anybody deal with this sound? I’ll post the YouTube vid when I get it uploaded.

Damn, I am afraid this is a timing chain being stretched or cam phaser issue. Dealing with it right now.

Yes, failed cam phasers. This 2nd gen ecoboost STILL has this same issue. Instead of fixing ($5k), sell it off and get something else. That will be the only way to escape.
We are even seeing 2019s fail with this. It is an inherent design issue that Ford can't fix. Phaser design was updated twice so far with no positive results. Boggles my mind that people still get suckered into buying ecobosts.

It will most likely come back... No new updated parts from Ford to fix this issue.

My 2018 with 20k miles is in the shop right now with the same issue. I had a 2017 with an oil consumption issue at 5k miles. I traded it at 14k miles for the exact same 2018 that is in the shop. Paid $5,000 for a second try.

I love the Raptor but I’m over the build issues.

It's more than that... It is DESIGN problems.

perusing the Ford website and found a new special service message # 48168 regarding "ticking/tapping or rattle type noise on start up after a cold soak" >>> says possibly due to worn variable cam timing units, and then to replace all 4 of them - specifically states do not replace timing chain, tensioners, guides etc. unless inspection "clearly identifies a concern". SSM also states TSB will be published 4th quarter 2019... INTERESTING

How do you guys feel about running 5w20 over 5w30?

I have heard the rumors about running different viscosity. I think it wont help much depending on what state and temps you encounter in the am. Some people I know have tried both and no results were clear. Interesting topic, I may go to Amsoil from people who tell me its the preferred oil for turbos.
