The 2017 Ford Raptor and 2017 Camaro ZL1 Use the Same Automatic Transmission The jointly developed 10-speed auto shows GM and Ford can work together. BY DAVID ZENLEA The SVT Raptor and Camaro ZL1 are very different performance vehicles from companies that have a long history of hating each other. But they do share something important—a 10-speed automatic transmission. It's not a coincidence. The new 'box is a joint development of GM and Ford, and it's very important for both companies. Within the next few years, it'll find its way into millions of pickups, which need to meet ever-stricter emissions laws. Why work together? Well, there's a history. The companies cooperated in the early 2000s on a 6-speed automatic transaxle for transverse-engine cars and crossovers. There's also a shared need: a transmission tough enough to tow with and cheap enough to build in the millions. GM says it will be in eight models by 2018. You can bet that includes the Silverado, Tahoe, and Escalade, as well as rear-wheel-drive cars like the Corvette and CTS. At Ford, look for it in regular F-150s as well as the next Lincoln Navigator and the next Mustang. Road & Track Article here.
It's interesting that both GM and Ford are debuting the transmission in some of their highest torque vehicles. The ZL1 is 640HP and 640-lb-ft of torque. Which in turn makes me wonder why Ford isn't putting it in the new Super Duty. Though maybe that's due to production capability.
Not likely, they will not interswap between vehicles, the transmissions will have different bellhousings and tail shafts that's for sure, upon so many different programming, etc.
