I'm a new owner of a used 2018. 12,500 miles on it. Since buying it a month ago it makes an unsettling noise after running for 20 minutes or more. Sounds like when you were a kid and your bike chain got too loose: The sprocket would spin without completely engaging the chain links, making a grinding noise, and then . . . clunk . . . it would engage again. That's as close as I can come to describing it. Sometimes it's just for a few seconds; sometimes it goes on for 10 or 15 seconds. It happens in 7th gear or above and typically above 50 mph. Sometimes it will do it many times in a 30 minute period, and sometimes not at all. Sometimes it stops immediately when I press the accelerator, other times it doesn't. Perplexing. I have a service appointment later this week but am concerned the service techs won't drive it long enough to experience the problem. Would like to point them in a direction if anyone else has had this happen to them. Than in advance.
Any video you can post, does it do it on a cold start ? Only other thing for the grinding noise is the IWE. Cheap part but goes out often.
Thanks for replying. No . . . only after running for awhile. Sometimes 30 minutes into a drive, sometimes longer. Totally unpredictable. I don't have any video but another owner posted a short video that had the same noise: His problem was a cracked front hub. My truck is in the shop now, and I shared the video. The service adviser also said there is a problem with a 4WD-related component so they're looking at that, as well. I'll post whatever solution they come up with.
Literally had this exact problem. Exact. Same year and mileage. I was able to replicate the noise by getting the truck warm, driving for a little, then shutting it off- and turning back on immediately. The grinding noise in full bloom and I have a video I can text you so you can see if it’s the same. I went to Gator Ford in Tampa and they heard it, diagnosed it, and swapped the muffler/exhaust. Problem solved.
Interesting. Another guy posted a video that sounded identical and his problem was a cracked front hub. Mine turned out to be a faulty vacuum check valve. Service Tech immediately suspected that when I explained the problem, and there was even a Technical Bulletin on it. It fixed the problem.
I had a noise that could vaguely be described as "grinding" and they said it was a check valve problem. They replaced it but it didn't fix the problem. Would you mind posting that video you said you have so I can compare the sounds?
